iNaturalist is a social network of naturalists, citizen scientists, and biologists built on the concept of mapping and sharing observations of biodiversity across the globe. iNaturalist can be used via computer or mobile app anywhere in the world with internet access.
These global observations inform ecologists, biologists, and climate scientists in myriad applications, such as tracking population distributions or migratory patterns, as well as how climate change is affecting the distributions and movements of species worldwide.
So if you are bringing your phone outdoors, and enjoy taking pictures, consider joining the biodiversity documentation movement!
Symbiiotica on iNaturalist
Check out Symbiioticas iNat projects:
Pyrophilous Fungi of the World- Highlighting the taxa of pyrophilous (fire-loving) fungi from around the world to better understand their enigmatic life ways.
Funga of Rips Redwoods- Tracking fungal diversity across 1,700 acres of coastal forest in Stewarts Point, CA. This is where we lead our fungal ecology walks.
Occidental Arts and Ecology Center biodiversity data base:
Funga of Sonoma County- Highlighting the fungi observed within Sonoma County, CA.
Fungi of Cambria- Tracking the fungal diversity, abundance and phenology of Cambria County, CA.
Fungi of Salt Point State Park- Documenting the diversity, distibution and phenology of fungi (including lichens) of Salt Point State Park
Mushroom forming fungi of Iceland- This project works to gain deeper understanding of the diversity, abundance and distribution all of the mushroom-forming macro fungal phyla in Iceland. (This project specifically does NOT include lichen-forming fungi, rusts, smuts, yeasts, microscopic fungi etc.)
Orchids of Iceland- Tracking hyperborean members of Orchidaceae in Iceland
Niveomycota (Snowbank Fungi)- Tracking the diversity, biogeography and phenology of snowbank-associated fungi, especially with the influence of rapidly changing climactic regimes.
